All About Home Renovation Companies

Choosing a home renovation company can be an intimidating process, but we're here to help! We've researched and ranked the best companies in four key categories: cost, customer service, quality of workmanship, and timeliness. We'll detail each category below so you can easily find a contractor that meets all of your needs.

Cost

These days, you can pay a lot for a good renovation. But not all renovation companies are created equally, and many game the system by skimping on materials or cutting corners. And the best companies don't charge an arm and a leg: most charge between $10-20/hour with a 3-week minimum project period.

Note that all the prices listed here include the cost of materials - a big difference from some companies that charge extra for those.

One caveat: be wary of companies that offer free estimates, as many are not licensed contractors. If a company offers to meet with you for free, ask about their license and insurance first, and make sure you have an itemized, written estimate before agreeing to anything. You can use this form to prepare or get your contractor's license number online or over the phone.

Customer service

(and customer satisfaction overall) is the single most important factor for a successful remodeling project. So it's important to make sure the company you choose has a good reputation for delivering on its promises - whether that's positive ratings from past customers, testimonials from friends, or a great website showing actual testimonials.

We've found that companies with good reputations are usually easily reachable, are responsive and prompt in answering questions and resolving problems, and can be reached by e-mail or phone.

We also checked out customer service sites like Yelp and Angie's List for the best companies. Since we've already mentioned them, you can check out reviews from those sites here.

Quality of workmanship

Ranking this category doesn't mean you can easily pick a contractor based on their skills alone - that's why there are so many other factors to consider. But if you're looking for a contractor who will pay attention to detail, you'll want to make sure they're meticulous in their work.

A decent remodeling company will be able to install brand-new siding, or replace old and broken tiles in your kitchen yourself, rather than sending you back into the home to cut out the old tiles yourself. Most professionals use high-quality materials to ensure a long-lasting renovation.

A word of caution: if the company tells you they'll be using the cheapest materials possible, that's a sign of inexperienced or unprofessional contractors.

It doesn't necessarily mean they'll be using low-quality products, but there's no good reason to use cheap materials for your home repairs or renovations. There are plenty of good, high-quality materials out there, so it's up to the contractor to choose them.

Timely completion

A project involves a certain amount of risk, especially when you're spending money for renovations or repairs. We found that a good rule of thumb is to look for companies whose work is guaranteed for at least a year and who offer homeowners' warranties on their projects.

A couple of companies in our rankings even offer lifetime warranties! We also checked out contractors in this article by HGTV.

A good company should be able to complete the renovation project in a timely fashion, with most renovation projects taking three weeks to a few months. If your project is more complicated - say, if you have a huge kitchen remodel or a home addition planned - then you can expect it to take even longer.

But if you're on a tight time frame yourself and the contractor is running over or behind schedule, that's when it's helpful to have some sort of guarantee in place.

A couple of companies are even offering customers "time-limited" renovations that give you the option to extend your remodeling project for an extra fee. Some of them even provide an online calendar of when their projects will be completed each day so you can see exactly how close your remodeling is to being finished.

San Jose Custom Home Renovations- Licensed Contractor in San José and Silicon Valley

Renovating your home can be a daunting task. For many people, the stress of renovation may often outweigh the benefits. Not only do you have to contend with all the noise and extra traffic coming in and out of your home, but also a lack of privacy as well as unexpected costs.

If you have found a contractor that you think will work well with your needs, it is a good idea to get everything in writing prior to signing contracts. This is to ensure that you are aware of all the costs- and limitations and responsibilities.
